Common questions

Do I need to apply before starting the work?

Yes. You must apply to SEAI and get your grant offer before any work starts or you buy materials. SEAI won't pay a grant for work that's already started or finished.

How much is the heat pump grant?

Up to €14,500 for a house and €11,500 for an apartment. That's made up of €6,500 for the heat pump (€4,500 for an apartment), a €4,000 bonus if you're replacing oil, gas, LPG, solid fuel or storage heaters, up to €2,000 for upgrading radiators or pipework (€1,000 for an apartment), and €2,000 boiler scrappage from 6 October 2026. Homes built before 2007 also get €200 towards the technical assessment.

How much is the solar panel grant?

€700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and €200 per kWp up to 4 kWp, so the most you can get is €1,800. Since 6 October 2026 there's also €600 for a home battery of 5 kWh or more. Your home must have been built and lived in before 2025.

My house was built after 2011. Can I still get grants?

Some. Insulation, windows, doors and heating controls are only for homes built and lived in before 2011. Heat pumps are for homes before 2021, and solar panels and batteries for homes before 2025. The EV charger grant doesn't depend on when your home was built.

Can I get the upgrades for free?

Possibly. SEAI's Warmer Homes scheme fully pays for upgrades if your home was built before 2006 and you get a qualifying payment such as Fuel Allowance, Working Family Payment or One-Parent Family Payment. The wait is long, often around two years.

Do I have to use an SEAI-registered contractor?

Yes. Each job has to be done by a contractor registered with SEAI, or for an EV charger, a registered electrician. Ask for their SEAI registration before you agree to anything.

Do I need a BER?

For most grants, yes. You'll need a Building Energy Rating after the work is done, and SEAI pays €50 towards it (€280 if you get a social welfare payment). Heat pumps also need a technical assessment first if your home was built before 2007.

Is grantcalc.ie part of SEAI?

No. grantcalc.ie is an independent guide that uses the amounts SEAI publishes. Always check the details and apply through SEAI.
